Chart the Course Health Career Academy
Three Rivers AHEC's Chart the Course Health Career Academy selects 20 top rising seniors from Health Science and Technology Education (HSTE) programs in Harris, Marion, and Muscogee Counties to participate in our in-depth exploration of health career professions. Students from Talbot and Chattahoochee Counties may also apply if space permits or if they have attended one of our Health Career summer camps.
The kick-off meeting each year provides the students a unique experience that normally would not be available in a school classroom setting - the first year the students traveled to Atlanta to attend the traveling The Body exhibit. Monthly meetings are held in the evening along with special events, such as attending the Ft Valley State University's Forensic program or traveling to Atlanta for Rural Health Day. Other events may include touring local health care facilities and getting a glimpse behind the scenes or performing surgery on cadavers. Regardless, each experience will be one that each student will remember.
At the end of the Academy year, students will earn a $250.00 scholarship provided they have completed all the requirements and upon enrolling in a post-secondary health science program. The inaugural 2006-07 Academy was partially funded by the Beloco Foundation.
Students interested in applying to our Chart the Course Academy, please contact Jennifer Camp at 706-256-1836 or email jcamp@threeriversahec.org.
The Academy follows the school calendar year - beginning in August and ending in May.
Chart the Course Health Career Camp
For the last ten years Three Rivers Area Health Education Center (AHEC) has conducted a four to five day summer camp for area high school students interested in expanding their knowledge about various health career opportunities. The students are selected from Muscogee, Harris, Talbot, Marion and Chattahoochee Counties. Students are required to fill out an application, state their interest in a health profession, have a 2.5 grade point average, and be recommended by a counselor or teacher. Up to 40 students may be selected, but usually the actual number attending is 20 - 25.
Activities have included: team building exercises, sensitivity to disabilities training, shadowing of health professionals, tours of area healthcare facilities and educational institutions, career exploration in nursing and allied health, guest speakers, laboratory experiments, and games with a health focus.
We have developed an in-depth tour and hands-on activities with Columbus Technical College and Columbus State Universities health science. This past year we also partnered with The Army ROTC health science program for some exciting activities as well as a tour of Martin Army Hospital.
